Bury's Locomotive D5705: Restoration Update and How to Help (2026)

Bold opening: A rescue mission is underway to bring Bury’s historic locomotive No. D5705 back to life—and the clock is ticking.

The Class 15 Preservation Society has shared a concise update on the fundraising efforts to restore the locomotive to service.

Background: In September 2025, the Co-Bo Appeal was launched to cover the initial rehabilitation costs, following GenElec’s quote of £16,680 plus VAT for the necessary work. To date, the appeal has raised £8,393, which places it firmly past the halfway mark toward the target.

Organization and events: Liam Barnes leads the campaign, with assistance from Zac Hinchcliffe. A dedicated photo charter took place on February 6 to boost visibility and donations for D5705. During this event, the locomotive was paired with a suitable Conflat wagon, box wagons, and a replica CONDOR headboard. This marked D5705’s first-ever charter, serving both to generate funds and raise awareness about the project.

Ways to contribute: There are several ways to help.

  • Merchandise: The Society offers a range of items, including monthly pin badge releases throughout 2026. The initial pin badge sold out in under 12 hours. Purchases can be made via their online shop at http://d8233.org.uk/shop.htm.
  • Direct donation: The Co-Bo Appeal remains active and currently needs £8,000 to reach its goal. You can donate directly here: https://www.facebook.com/donate/1773219470041882/1259663319540306/

If you’re curious about the project, consider joining the conversation: What are the biggest benefits or risks of restoring a locomotive like D5705 in today’s context? Would you prioritize speed of restoration, historical authenticity, or broader public engagement—and why?
