Drakesbrook Weir Bacteria Alert: Is It Safe to Swim? | Summer Holiday Safety (2026)

Summer fun alert! But before you dive in, heed this important warning about Drakesbrook Weir. The Shire of Waroona is urging everyone to stay out of the water this holiday season due to the presence of some unwelcome guests.

Recent tests have revealed elevated levels of potentially harmful bacteria. Specifically, the water contains higher-than-normal amounts of E. coli, enterococci, and thermophilic amoebae. This means that swimming, wading, or any contact with the water is currently discouraged.

Now, while the detected thermophilic amoebae aren't the particularly nasty Naegleria fowleri (the kind that can cause serious brain issues and has been found in the weir before), the Shire is still playing it safe. A spokesperson emphasized that this is a short-term precaution and that updates will be provided as soon as new test results are available.

But here's where it gets controversial... The WA Health Department is supporting the local government's actions, emphasizing its role in providing guidance and support to various agencies regarding public health risks associated with natural water bodies. They're basically saying, 'We've got this covered, and we agree, stay out of the water for now.'

This warning comes shortly after the shire removed its popular pontoon in early December due to low water levels.

While the Shire continues to monitor the water quality, temporary advisory signs have been posted. The public will be informed of further test results as they become available.
