Inflatable Robots: Giant T-Rex & More! | AirForce Robotic Structures (2026)

The world of robotics and animatronics is constantly evolving, and researchers at the Hasso Plattner Institute have just unveiled a groundbreaking innovation that will revolutionize how we build large, animated structures. They've developed a system called AirForce that transforms inflatable tubes into robotic structures, opening up a world of possibilities for animatronics and beyond.

What makes AirForce truly remarkable is its ability to create massive, animated structures from a single, long inflatable tube. By integrating pneumatic actuators into the tube itself, the system can effectively fold the material into complex shapes without the need for conventional joints or separate pneumatic cylinders. This not only reduces the weight and complexity of the structure but also allows for a more efficient and versatile design.

The researchers developed three types of integrated actuators for different functions. Buckling actuators, for instance, straighten when pressurized, pushing their endpoints apart. Muscle actuators expand in diameter while contracting in length, producing a pulling force. Telescoping actuators, on the other hand, partially collapse at their ends when pressure drops and extend again when inflated, providing the largest forces. These actuators can generate impressive peak forces, with the telescoping version reaching an astonishing 2,330 N.

To achieve these forces, the researchers made significant changes to the inflatable tubing. They tripled the tube's cross-section and switched from fin seals to stronger lap seals, allowing for a fourfold increase in operating pressure. They also replaced conventional compressors with custom blowers capable of delivering 50 times more airflow. Each blower uses a Domel 714-series motor, an ESP32-C3-based controller, a pressure sensor, and a 40 V, 2.5-Ah battery.

The AirForce system is designed to be user-friendly and accessible. Users can design their creations using an AirForce plugin for Blender, which automatically routes the tube through the structure and converts selected sections into actuators. The software then divides large designs into manageable parts and generates labels for adding ties, seals, inlets, and blowers. This makes the creation process straightforward, requiring no specialized equipment.

One of the most impressive demonstrations of AirForce's capabilities is a 50-foot-long, 25-foot-high, 60-kilogram animatronic Tyrannosaurus rex. Buckling actuators operate its jaw, muscle actuators move its tail, and telescoping actuators tilt the entire dinosaur. This level of detail and movement is made possible by the system's ability to create complex structures from a single tube.

The best part? Disassembling a structure is as simple as letting out the air. The tubing can be folded for transport or untied and reused to build something completely different, with nearly 100% of the structural material available for another creation. This level of reusability and adaptability is a game-changer for the field of animatronics.

In my opinion, AirForce is a remarkable innovation that pushes the boundaries of what's possible in robotics and animatronics. It demonstrates the power of thinking outside the box and embracing new materials and technologies. As we continue to explore the potential of inflatable structures, I'm excited to see how AirForce and similar advancements will shape the future of animation and robotics.
