The core of the negotiation revolves around the duration of LaFleur's contract, not the annual salary. Agents familiar with coaching deals suggest that LaFleur seeks job security, the assurance that he is the team's long-term leader. This means knowing he can coach without the constant worry of being fired.
One agent with extensive experience in coaching contract negotiations stated, "It's years, not money... It's about LaFleur having some security, knowing he can coach without worrying about getting fired. He wants to know if he's their guy. Are they all-in with him?"
But here's where it gets controversial: if the Packers are hesitant to offer a substantial extension, they risk sending a message of doubt, essentially making LaFleur a 'lame duck' coach. This lack of commitment could push LaFleur to explore opportunities with other teams, where he could find a more secure future.
Another agent suggests LaFleur might be aiming for an annual salary between $15 million and $17 million, which would place him among the top-paid coaches in the league, just below the likes of Andy Reid, John Harbaugh ($20 million), and Sean Payton ($18 million).
LaFleur's current contract, estimated to be worth between $8 million and $10 million, is in its second iteration.
The agent believes that LaFleur should not settle for less than a three-year deal. The Packers made a mistake by not extending LaFleur's contract earlier, before the end of this season.
The Packers' recent performance, including a series of losses, may have influenced Policy and Gutekunst to offer less than they might have if LaFleur had achieved greater success.
And this is the part most people miss: LaFleur's leverage is significant. There are numerous head-coaching vacancies in the NFL, and the Packers would face competition for a new coach.
The Packers might have considered John Harbaugh, but they didn't pursue him, as they were already in negotiations with LaFleur. The team would probably prefer an offensive coach, but the available candidates may not match LaFleur's expertise.
If the Packers and LaFleur can't agree, LaFleur could negotiate with other teams, and the Packers could receive draft-pick compensation.
