Why Gen Z Spends $2,000+ on Music Festivals (And Why It's Worth It!) (2026)

Why Gen Z is willing to shell out $2k for an unforgettable New Year's Eve experience

The Australian countryside is buzzing with excitement as tens of thousands of Gen Zers gear up for a New Year's Eve camping adventure, despite the hefty price tag. Victoria's renowned Beyond the Valley (BTV) festival is set to welcome 35,000-40,000 music lovers to the Barunah Plains, located 130km west of Melbourne. Tickets range from $250 to $500, with camping passes adding an extra $150 to $350 to the overall cost.

But what's the allure of these camping festivals that makes Gen Zers fork out such substantial sums? Melbourne local Liam Thornton, who spent $1500 on his last camping festival, sums it up perfectly: 'It's an experience you can't get anywhere else.'

'All your friends in one spot, no phone service - it's an escape from reality,' he adds. This sense of community and immersion in nature is a powerful draw for many young people.

A group of 22-year-olds spent between $1500 and $2500 on the November Strawberry Fields festival, highlighting the financial commitment many are willing to make for this unique experience. Jordyn Elford, a Melbourne resident, spent a significant amount, saying, 'I feel fine spending the money... I had an amazing experience and am happy to keep investing in these festivals.'

However, the music festival industry is facing challenges. Creative Australia's research reveals that over one-third of music festivals lost money in 2022-23, with an average cost of $3.9 million. Festival organizers grapple with rising operational costs, lack of government funding, insurance expenses, and unpredictable weather, making it a risky venture.

'Before it even gets to people buying tickets, it's too big a risk for the organizers,' says Josh Keys, co-director of Hopkins Creek Festival. 'The numbers just don't add up.'

So, while Gen Zers are willing to spend big for these immersive experiences, the industry must navigate financial challenges to ensure these festivals remain viable and accessible for all.
