The recent heavy rainfall in Wollongong has revealed a series of concerning health and safety issues at the local hospital. At Wollongong Hospital, the older persons' mental health unit found itself playing host to pigeons and their lice, an unwelcome addition to the healthcare environment. The intensive care unit (ICU) and various other areas were not spared either, as mould crept into wards, offices, sprinklers, and even the bathroom floor. Water leaks were also a problem, with an elevator affected.
And the issues didn't stop there. At Shellharbour Hospital, the ceiling tiles couldn't withstand the rain and collapsed, while the staff office area suffered from waterlogging. The spokeswoman from the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (LHD) attributed all these problems to the relentless wet weather.
A Complex Clean-up Operation:
The LHD spokesperson assured that all these issues have been addressed. An extensive clean-up and remediation process, which began in December 2025, involved pest control experts tackling the pigeon problem and repairing the roof damage. This operation required significant safety measures, including road closures and police support, as some repairs were conducted 50 meters off the ground.
The hospital's ICU and specialized inpatient units also received much-needed attention. Mould around air vents, water leaks, and mould in various wards and patient bathrooms have all been repaired. The LHD spokesperson emphasized that patient and staff safety and comfort are paramount, and they are committed to maintaining high cleanliness standards.
Controversy and Comment:
While the hospital has taken steps to rectify these issues, one can't help but question if these problems could have been prevented with better maintenance and more proactive measures.
